Počitelj at a glance
Počitelj is a fortified village on the left bank of the Neretva, on the main road between Mostar and Metković, in the municipality of Čapljina. The ensemble has a medieval phase and an Ottoman phase, and it is built on a slope above the river, so expect to climb.
The village is a popular stop for people driving between Mostar and the coast. This is an independent guide. It is not run by the municipality, a heritage body or a tour company, and it does not promise access to every tower or building.

What to see in Počitelj
A short climb with a few fixed points.
The village on the slope
Počitelj is best seen on foot. The houses and walls step up the hillside above the river, and every turn gives a new angle on the Neretva. Wear shoes with grip.
The fortress towers
The fortress towers rise above the village. Whether you can climb a particular tower on the day depends on its condition, so ask on site and do not plan around it.
The Hadži-Alija Mosque
A historic monument publication gives a building inscription of 1562/1563. If you enter, cover your shoulders and knees, take off your shoes and be quiet. Opening times are not fixed, so ask on site.
The other buildings
UNESCO's inventory also names a madrasa, a hammam and a clock tower in the ensemble. Whether you can go inside any of them varies, and the inventory text dates from 2007.

Počitelj and UNESCO: what the status means
Počitelj is on UNESCO's tentative list, which is a list of sites a country plans to nominate. That is different from the World Heritage List. A tentative-list entry is not an inscription, so Počitelj is not a World Heritage Site. You may see the two mixed up on other websites.
The UNESCO text calls it a historic urban site, a fortified ensemble from the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period. That entry was submitted on 2 January 2007 and describes the state of that time. For the actual condition of the site today, use what you see on the day.

Before you go: tickets, hours and safety
Entry rules for the fortress, individual towers and the mosque can differ. Bring small change in convertible marks (KM). The central bank rate on 21 October 2026 was 1 euro = 1.95583 KM. Ask at the entrance or in the village whether an area is open and what it costs.
- Heat: a hillside with little shade is hard work in summer. The average August daily high in nearby Mostar is 33.5 °C (about 92 °F), so start early and carry water.
- Paths and ruins: stay on established paths and roads. Official travel advice warns about mines and unexploded ordnance in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly outside busy areas. Do not enter ruins or overgrown land off the path.
- Parking: the village lies on the main road, so you can stop on the way. Do not leave valuables visible in a parked rental car, since cars with foreign plates have been targeted for break-ins.
For other safety points see the travel tips. If you sleep in the area, look at where to stay.
Combine Počitelj with other stops
Because it lies on the main road, it fits easily into a longer day.
A simple route through the village
One way to use an hour well.
Start low
Park near the main road and begin at the lower part of the village, where the climb is gentle. Take photos of the whole slope from here before you go up.
Climb in stages
Stop at the mosque on the way, look back at the river, then continue toward the towers. Rest in the shade when you find it.
Come down by the same way
Stay on established paths in both directions. If an area is closed or blocked, do not enter it.
